The spirits of times gone by await you at Ryecroft Hall, are you ready to meet them? join us on 1st October 2010

In 1849 the land which Ryecroft Hall stands on was bought by James Smith Buckley. James and his brother Abel were cotton manufacturers owning Ryecroft and Oxford Road Mills. The Hall as we see today took several years to build and featured a library, large dining room, study, billard room, ball room, sitting rooms, bedrooms and servants quarters.

In 1851 James Buckley died with the hall still unfinished it was inherited by his son James who then sold it to his brother William Smith Buckley, he lived in the hall until he died in 1877.

Ryecroft Hall is built on the land bought from the Earl of Stamford and Warrington in 1849 by James Smith Buckley. The Earl owned much of the land around Tameside and the estate is still a major landowner. n 1885 the hall was passed on to Abel Buckley, William’s cousin. (Another Abel!) Abel lived at Ryecroft Hall for 22 years.

During the Great War 1914 – 1918 the Hall became a Red Cross hospital. In 1922 the house and grounds were given to Audenshaw. There have been many reports of ghostly activity with the hall. Staff members have reported seeing an apparition of a Chambermaid dancing in the ballroom. And some refuse to walk the upper floor due to oppressive feelings. In latter years many visitors have claimed to have heard moans and groans along with a strange and very strong smell.

On one occasion while working late one office staff were told to get out when entering a room knowing they were working alone in the building they did as they were told leaving all the the lights on which then brought the attention of the police in the early housrs of gthe morning no intruder was found but a uneasy feeling was detected and recorded on the incident log.
